Taiwan Travel Vocabulary: Words You'll Actually Use
These are the words that come up constantly in daily life in Taiwan but rarely make it into general Chinese textbooks. Learn them and you'll be able to navigate the MRT, order at a night market, and get around like a local.

Getting Around
Taiwan's public transit runs on 捷運 (MRT) and buses, almost all paid for with a rechargeable 悠遊卡 (EasyCard) that also works at convenience stores and even some restaurants. You'll also hear 摩托車 (scooter) constantly — scooters are everywhere in Taiwan and are often the fastest way to get around outside Taipei.
Food and Drink
夜市 (night markets) are the center of casual food culture, packed with 小吃 (street food/snacks) stalls. 珍珠奶茶, usually shortened to 珍奶, was invented in Taiwan and is sold on nearly every block. For breakfast, locals often stop at a neighborhood 早餐店 rather than cook at home.
Everyday Life
便利商店 (convenience stores — mainly 7-Eleven and FamilyMart) are a genuine part of daily infrastructure in Taiwan, used for paying bills, picking up packages, and printing documents, not just snacks. Knowing these words will get you through a normal day in Taiwan far more than textbook greetings will.
