What Is the TOCFL?
The TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) is Taiwan's official Mandarin proficiency exam, developed and administered by the Steering Committee for the Test Of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP). It tests listening and reading comprehension using traditional characters, and it's the standard reference for Mandarin study programs, scholarships, and some work or residency applications connected to Taiwan.
How the Levels Work
The TOCFL is organized into three bands, each covering two levels: Band A (Novice, Levels 1–2), Band B (Intermediate, Levels 3–4), and Band C (Advanced, Levels 5–6). Each level builds on a published core vocabulary list, so by Level 5 a learner is expected to recognize around 8,000 words, roughly the C1 range on the CEFR scale.
TOCFL vs HSK
The HSK is the mainland Chinese equivalent, testing simplified characters and pinyin, and it's far better known internationally simply because it has more test-takers. If your goal is specifically Taiwan — study, work, or long-term life there — the TOCFL is the more relevant credential, and preparing for it means learning the traditional characters and vocabulary you'll actually encounter.
How to Prepare
Build vocabulary level by level rather than jumping ahead — each TOCFL band has a defined word list, so studying in order avoids gaps. Reading practice with traditional-character texts and listening practice with Taiwan-accented audio will matter more for TOCFL prep than materials built around mainland Mandarin.
